Recycling hair to assist Gulf of Mexico oil spill containment

State of Mind Salon and Day Spa serving as collection point for local salons

Crown Point…By sweeping up hair clippings in their own salon and serving as a collection point for hair and pet fur donations, State of Mind Salon and Day Spa has become involved in an organic solution to containing the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

State of Mind invites all area salons and pet groomers to collect clippings in plastic bags for drop off at the salon at Crownhurst Centre, 111 West 94th Avenue. The bags will be shipped each Friday to Matter of Trust, a nonprofit currently involved in helping to contain the Gulf oil spill.

The loose hair will be stuffed into nylon stockings to create “booms” that surround, contain and soak up oil spills. The “hair mat” was developed by Phil McCrory, a hair stylist from Alabama.

We are committed to raising this generation of employee to not only be technically strong at their craft and to be professional business people, but also to show them how to get involved,” said Pattie Kobe, owner, State of Mind.  “It may sound silly but not everyone that comes to work for us knows how to take action and be a part of the community.”
